REGISTER TO VOTE
If you are the owner or occupier of a property or business within the City of Hamilton and meet the following registration requirements, you can apply to be registered on the Municipal Register for Hamilton at any time, other than after an Election has been called. Registering enables you to vote in all Corporation elections and run for office.
To be eligible to vote you must:
- Be 18 years olds
- Be a Commonwealth citizen o possess Bermudian status
- Have been ordinarily resident in Bermuda throughout the three years immediately preceding application.
- Occupy or own a valuation unit within the municipal area of Hamilton for at least three months prior to registration.
- Be not more than three months in arrears in Corporation taxes.
Registration:
- Where property ownership is vested jointly in a husband and wife, each is entitled to register and vote. If property is vested jointly by a husband, wife and others, then a nominee must be appointed by at least two of the owners.
- Where property ownership is vested in more than one person (not husband and wife) then a nominee must also be appointed and signed by at least two of the owners.
- If you are the occupier of a valuation unit, you must also submit a completed Landlord’s Certificate along with your registration form.
Additionally:
- A company, partnership, association, or body of persons (other than exempted companies) must designate a nominee to vote on its behalf.
- The voter name to be registered must be as follows:
- For a sole proprietorship only the name of the sole proprietor.
- For a partnership, the legal name of the partnership, alternatively the names of all of the partners, together with an appointment of one of the partners as the nominee of the partnership.
- For a limited liability company, the name of the company (which must end in “Ltd”) together with an appointment of a qualified person as the nominee of the company.
- Trusts
Where a valuation unit is either owned or rented by a trust, the person or persons entitled to vote for that unit must be a trustee or an officer of the trust company appointed to be the trustee. Neither the previous owner/tenant of the valuation unit (the settlor) nor any of the beneficiaries of the trust can vote for the Trust.
- Associations
As with a partnership, associations can only vote by a nominee who must be a member of the association at the time of voting. The nominee of an association must continue to be a member of the association in order to be able to vote.
Change of Nominee:
Applications to change a nominee can be submitted to the Corporation at any time. Once an election has been called, the Secretary will only accept a Change of Nominee prior to 5.00 p.m. on the day before Nomination Day.
