Parking Restrictions for Four-Wheeled Vehicles on the Street

One-Hour Maximum Parking Areas

Four-wheeled vehicles parking on any of the streets marked on the parking map in green or in red dots on a green background, are “RESTRICTED” to one-hour maximum parking in any one location between the hours of 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. Monday to Saturday – except Public Holidays. Please note that “One-Hour Maximum” parking applies to the following areas, which are NOT included in the Voucher Parking Zone: -

  • The whole length of Court Street;
  • The whole length of Par-la-Ville Road (as far north as the B.A.A. roundabout);
  • The whole of Wesley Street (including the section of Wesley Street between Victoria Street and Park Road);
  • All of the streets east of Court Street, including Victoria Street and all of those streets south of Victoria Street. This includes Reid Street East (to the top of Spurling Hill) and Front Street East (to the City’s eastern boundary).

Voucher Parking Zone

The Voucher Parking Zone is marked on the parking map in red dots on a green background. The whole of the zone also lies within the “One-Hour Maximum” parking area. Valid parking vouchers must be displayed by all four-wheeled vehicles parking on these streets between the hours of 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. Monday to Saturday – except Public Holidays.

The Voucher Parking Zone includes Point Pleasant Road and Albouy’s Point (alongside and behind the Bank of Bermuda Head Offices).

Vouchers are not required on goods vehicles parking in loading zones, or by taxis parking in marked taxi bays, but goods vehicles and taxis are NOT exempt from using vouchers when parking in regular parking bays.

Voucher parking does NOT apply to two-wheeled vehicles.

Parking Vouchers can be purchased at stores throughout the Island, and from gas stations, post offices, and the City Hall in Hamilton.

15-Minute “Free” Parking Areas

There are two areas immediately outside the General Post Office, one on Church Street and one on Parliament Street, where four-wheeled vehicles are permitted to park for a maximum of 15 minutes free. View our parking map for clarification. This is intended solely for persons using the Post Office and should not be abused.

All Day parking (Free)

Parking on streets north of Victoria Street (but not including Victoria Street) is generally  “all day” except where signs indicate otherwise e.g’s “One Hour Maximum” and “Residential Parking” areas. Please note, however that the whole of Court Street, Par-la-Ville Road, and Wesley Street are restricted to “one-hour maximum parking”. Other areas where parking is restricted include “School Zones” reserved for dropping off and picking up students at certain times as indicated by signs, loading zones, and taxi bays etc. View our parking map for clarification.

Disabled Parking Bays

These bays can be used by persons displaying a valid Disabled Parking Permit, issued by the Corporation of Hamilton. For further information about applying for a Disabled Parking Permit please inquire at City Hall or click here to download a permit application.

Residential Parking

Residential Parking Permits are valid from 1st February through 31st January each year. A notice is published in the newspaper each January, advising the public to apply for, or renew, their residential parking permits. There is no charge for residential parking permits. All applicants must complete an application form making sure it is readable and filled out in detail. Criteria for receiving a residential parking permit include: (a) city taxes paid (either by applicant or landlord), (b) permanent resident of city, (c) must own a car, (d) must have current car registration, and (e) no off-street parking available with residence. A permit will be issued, together with a signed copy of the Rules and Regulations, to the applicant upon approval. An application may be denied if: (a) taxes not paid; (b) car registration not current; (c) residence has off-street parking available for use by tenants.

Motor Cycle Parking

Parking for motor cycles in marked bays in City car parks and on City streets is FREE, but there are some parking restrictions. Although not shown on the map, there are several areas in the City centre where cycle parking on the street is restricted to “one hour maximum”. All of these cycle parking bays are clearly marked and you are strongly advised to check the signs before parking. Please be advised that additional restrictions, indicated by signs, may be implemented regarding cycle parking. DO NOT PARK ON SIDEWALKS.

There are several cycle bays outside the General Post Office on Church Street and Parliament Street, which are restricted to 15 minutes maximum. These are adjacent to the “15 minute maximum” free parking area for four-wheeled vehicles.

Loading Zones

Only “Goods Vehicles: (LP vans, light, intermediate and heavy trucks etc.) are permitted to park in Loading Zones between the hours of 8.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. Mondays  - Fridays.

  • Parking in any Loading Zone is restricted to one-hour maximum.
  • Private cars parking in Loading zones within the Voucher Parking Area on Saturdays are required to use parking vouchers just as if they are parking in regular parking bays.
  • PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WHOLE OF LOWER REID STREET, BETWEEN BURNABY STREEET AND QUEEN STREET (EXCLUDING CYCLE PARKING BAYS) IS DESIGNATED AS A LOADING ZONE BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 8.00 A.M. and 10,00 A.M. MONDAYS – FRIDAYS.

It is anticipated that new regulations loading zones will soon be introduced by the Corporation. These regulations will include a “TEN MINUTE RULE” which means that good vehicles must not park in any loading zone within the Voucher Parking Area for more than 10 minutes unless there are visible signs that the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded. The purpose of these new regulations is to ensure that loading zones in the City centre are used only for the purpose for which they are intended i.e. for the loading and unloading of goods. Special zones will be created for “Service Vehicles”. These new rules will be published in the newspapers and in the Official Gazette.
