REGISTER TO VOTE

PRESS STATEMENT – January 20th, 2009

The Corporation of Hamilton today reminds the public that eligible voters in the City of Hamilton should be registered to vote by January 30th in order to vote in the upcoming election for a Common Councillor, scheduled for February 19th. Changes to nominees may still be made up to February 12th.

Corporation Secretary Edward Benevides, J.P. says: “The Corporation of Hamilton encourages all city tax-payers who are not yet registered to vote in Municipal elections to come to the Corporation offices in City Hall to collect the appropriate forms to be registered. Once the official notice of the election has been published by the Returning Officer, the register will be closed to new applicants.”

To be eligible to vote people must: be 18 years old; be a Commonwealth citizen or possess Bermudian status; have been ordinarily resident in Bermuda throughout the three years immediately preceding application; occupy or own a valuation unit within the municipal area of Hamilton for at least three months prior to registration; be not more than three months in arrears in Corporation taxes.
